About Me

James McLean

the programmer
I’m 25 years old and
been working with PHP professionally since 2002. I have worked with and built everything from basic CMS systems to full Object-Oriented Frameworks in PHP 4 and 5, currently employed Full Time as a PHP Software Engineer at a large web-development firm in Adelaide, South Australia. In work hours I am working with Drupal, writing custom code and modules for a large Social Networking site aimed at the Australian Higher Education Sector, and in my own time after hours I’m working with my own PHP5 Framework to support a number of web-applications I have written and will be launching soon.
After hours I’m also studying Computer and Information Science at the University of South Australia, chasing my dream of working for an Internet Giant like Google or Yahoo!

the kart racer
Dad got me into Karting in 1991 after seeing me drive a hire kart pretty well (I was 11 at the time) and thought it could be something I could make a go of - being the typical uncoordinated geeky type - and because I always loved motor racing from a young age.

Since that early start I went on to a number of good results throughout Rookies and Junior National Light and Heavy such as Laurie Coles Memorial Winner at Whyalla by winning Junior National Light and Junior National Heavy, 2nd Blue Lake City Titles and a few other good results. Just as I made the transition from Rookies to Juniors I was lucky enough to race at an International meeting, the Invercargill International Street Race at the Ascot Park Hotel in New Zealand. I was racing Junior Restricted which is a full-size kart and KT100S motor with a box exhaust designed to restrict the power of the engine. Also racing in the class on the day was current V8 Supercar driver Fabian Coulthard (David Coulthard from Formula1 is his cousin).

In Seniors I raced Senior National Light and Heavy, winning Gokart Club of SA Club Championship award in 1998 and 1999. 1999 was also my last year in Karting, until now :)

This time around I have picked up an AX8 28/30 with 30mm axle, so that will suit Senior National Light perfectly. Not many people run Senior National these days unfortunantly, so I think before the end of the year I will be at least picking up a clubman motor and running either Sportsman or Clubman Light. The ideal situation would be to pick up another kart, possibly an AX9 30/32 for running Clubman Light, and run Senior National Light when it is offered. Well thats the dream…
